What is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is the area comprising 26 European countries that have abolished passport and any other type of border control at their common borders, also referred to as internal borders.

It functions as a single country for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy. The area is named after the Schengen Agreement. Countries in the Schengen Area have eliminated internal border controls with the other Schengen members.

About the Schengen Area

How and why was the Schengen area formed in the first place? The Schengen Agreement was signed on 14 June 1985. This agreement was signed in the town of Schengen, Luxembourg hence the name.

The agreement was then supplemented in 1990 by the Schengen Convention where it was proposed that internal borders and common visa policy be abolished. The rules adopted in these agreements were entirely separate from the EU structures at the time and resulted in the creation of the Schengen Area on 26 March 1995.

It wasn’t until 1997 when this agreement was then absorbed into mainstream European Union law, as the popularity of EU member states signing the agreement increased.

Currently, 26 European countries participate in the Schengen Area which means that they function as a single country for international purposes. This area currently comprises of over 400 million people and an area of 4,312,099 square kilometers. Thanks to this agreement, travelling between these countries in Europe has become much easier for tourists.
